I love the smell of holiday baking but don’t always have time to whip something up! Instead, I like to put this holiday potpourri in a pot on the wood stove to make my house smell yummy all day.

This recipe would make an excellent and quick affordable gift for your neighbour, new friend, mail carrier, or teacher. You could easily purchase or make muslin bags for the ingredients to go into or package them in cellophane with festive ribbons to tie it off. My kids like to help make these for people. We set up an assembly line and they all have their jobs.

Everyone has different smells that bring the holiday’s to mind, but I find the ingredients in this holiday potpourri recipe are especially festive! So what do I put in it?

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a common holiday smell. Many people make gingerbread houses to decorate and gingerbread cookies to eat! Cinnamon buns are another favourite Christmas morning treat!

Orange

As a child, I used to only get Clementine oranges in my stocking, any other time of the year we ate regular large oranges. The smell of orange next to the other ingredients adds such depth!

Cranberries

What says Holidays better than cranberries? A staple side dish, cranberry sauce was always enjoyed by our family. My Nana used to make hers from scratch and it was delightful!

Cloves

This is another ingredient that adds depth to this holiday potpourri recipe. Its commonly used in recipes that call for cinnamon like gingerbread cookies.

Rosemary

Rosemary is often used to season turkey, stuffing, and potatoes. It has a nice rich herb scent that will surely remind you of a holiday meal.

The Recipe:

  • 2 Clementine oranges
  • 1 cup cranberries
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp whole cloves
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary

Put all ingredients into a muslin bag or gift bag. Attach these instructions to the bag:

Peel oranges and put peels into a small pan and then place all other ingredients into the pan and place on your stove top, wood stove or into a crock pot on low and enjoy all day. Top up with more water if you’d like to enjoy it longer. Discard at the end of the day.
